Abstract : |
The safety of ground vehicle size, or smaller, large format battery packs is discussed with particular reference to lithium-ion batteries. Cell and battery construction are outlined. Details of Battery Management Systems are presented, which control the battery during charging and discharging and keep them within safe parameters. Selected high-profile lithium-ion battery fires are reviewed, along with their outcomes. Because of the possible toxicity of emissions during such fires, the combustion of lithium-ion batteries are also described for experiments using infrared spectrometry to analyse the non-visible emission products. Extreme abuse testing using nails and bullets are also discussed. These were carried out because of the possible dangers in the battlefield. Suggestions are made for alleviating battery failures and some guidelines are presented for choosing the best battery chemistry for a given application. |
