Résumé : |
shows how simple models based on mutual interactions between children and their environments explain not only smooth evolutions but also sudden jumps, temporal regressions, cycles and chaotic change. This study provides an introductory account of the new dynamic systems approach and its view on developmental processes. A central concept of this approach is non-linearity: small causes can have big effects and variables may be sensitive to threshold effects. Dynamic systems models capture a variety of developmental trajectories, and show how developmental patterns emerge out of the way in which the participants in developmental processes interact over time. This book covers general aspects, but individual differences are also accounted for. Van Geert goes on to demonstrate that, cast in the dynamic systems mould, the classic developmental models such as J. Piaget's assimilation-accommodation model, or L. Vygotsky's zone of proximal development, reveal hidden complexities.
Van Geert illustrates this study with examples drawn from early language development, cognitive development and learning. Although mathematical equations are the basis to the dynamic systems approach, this book concentrates on the consequences of this approach for the science of psychological development. Mathematical equations and easy tutorials are presented which enable the reader to test the model in a spreadsheet format. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved) |
