Résumé : | Belgian Air Component pilots lack concrete knowledge of their guided air-to-air weapons. Therefore, the squadrons requested a study that outlines the relevant information regarding guidance and control of the currently used missiles. This study was conducted in 2021. However, the relevant information must be transferred to the pilots. Due to their full training schedule, the transfer of knowledge must be as efficient as possible. Consequently, a didactical animation was developed, showcasing an air-to-air engagement with an AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder. The free and open-source animation software Blender was chosen because of its accessibility and large online community. The animation’s goal is to generate meaningful mental models of the relevant concepts, while also decreasing the cognitive load for the target audience. The generation of mental models facilitates learning of the missile’s operation and capabilities. This blended learning method captures the attention of the diverse group of pilots. Additionally, the animation functions as one of seven cornerstones of High Impact Learning that Lasts (HILL). High impact learning is required in an organization where information continuously evolves. With the addition of a hybrid learning method, all seven cornerstones of the HILL model are present in a pilot’s training. Consequently, this thesis’ didactical output is ready for implementation in the squadron. However, giving the audience control over the animation’s speed would result in an additional benefit for learning. This option is recommended for future didactical models, should it become plausible for implementation in the squadrons. |
