Résumé : | A ‘Taiwan flashpoint’ has remained one of the most critical issues in international politics and foreign policy. On Octo?ber 9, 2021, Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged that the “historical task of the complete reunification of the moth?erland must be fulfilled.” Many observers believed that the “complete reunification” would be due by 2049, the year of the ultimate realization of the Chinese Dream, although no authoritative Chinese source has explicitly linked the 2049 goal to reunification with Taiwan. In response to Xi’s affirmation, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen urged allies to support Taiwan, stating “they should remember that if Taiwan were to fall, the consequences would be catastrophic for regional peace and the democratic alliance system.” |
