First and foremost they glossed over the regime’s total disrespect for human rights: the Tunisian government was praised for what it did not do – protecting civil liberties – and left unscathed for the crimes that it did commit, which ranged from political repression to torture. This stands out in stark contrast to the criticisms that have been directed at Belarus over the past decade. Is this because Ben Ali was more adept at hiding his true nature than Lukashenka is? Is it because Belarus is a part of Europe and Tunisia is not, so that, for whatever reason, Europeans feel more entitled to criticise their next of kin than a former colonised country?
