Coupled with the economic crisis, the absence of any significant military threat to the national security of Member States has led to significant cuts in defence spending in some countries (e.g. UK, France). Injecting more money into defence would hardly be acceptable to European publics. Europeans have been facing budget cuts already affecting public sector salaries and in a climate where cutbacks are also severely rolling back social welfare spending. .../... |
