Résumé : | SOF units have become increasingly important in the current security challenges, because of the irregularity of conflicts, urbanisation and the importance of local people. These challenges call for a different way of working, and recognising women’s role in it. Gender diversity in the armed forces is not a new subject, but for the past few years, many countries have been looking for ways to involve women more in SOF missions and to integrate them in SOF units. This thesis focuses on how gender diversity is established in Belgian and Norwegian SOF and what the challenges related to it are. The main challenges are giving women the time and space to learn at their own pace, accepting gender diversity and not expecting women to become more masculine: being open to accepting that femininity is equivalent to masculine values, providing future career opportunities, adapting training to the way women learn, making sure women do not feel threatened by their male peers so that they can become highly skilled, changing the general mindset from being mainly focussed on the physical aspects to other aspects, and accepting changed or lowered standards. Leadership plays a very important role in this. |
