Abstract: |
John Olver, an American politician and a retired Representative for Massachusetts's lst
congressional district[2], said these words in 2006 when he was speaking about the warin Iraq that started in 2003. Eager to send troops to Iraq to search for their nuclear weapons, the government of the United States did not tak.e the time to collect and distribute the equipment needed to protect the troops that would soon set foot on the ground. The result, as stated above, was that a lot of lives where lost due to the lack of proper preparations and the eagerness to start the war. This was not only the case with the U.S. Army, but equaly so for the British forces[3]. The rush of going into war caused a lack of proper armour for the troops and vehicles. This was part of the conclusion of the Iraq lnquiry in 2016. For both the U.S. and the British army this is now part of their lessons learned. ln more recent history, the Afghan war against the Taliban, a lack of proper armour has proven to be the cause of a lot of casualties and deaths. This was mainly the case for the Afghan forces[4], who drave in open vehicles. The U.S. forces, deployed to battle the Taliban and help the Afghan government to tak.e control of the country, tried to help as muchas possible. A lack of resources and local knowledge made these tasks diffi.cult. When a country invests in a military force, it is easy to loose itself in the offensive side of a conflict. The opinion that bigger is better, with bigger guns, planes and vehicles that cause more damage and hit the enemy harder and faster is easy to comprehend, and thus an easier to defend as an investment. It is easy for the inexperienced in this matter to forget that these weapons are useless in battle, when they are vulnerable to the slightest threat. |
