Résumé : |
During the twentieth century, energy production has known major changes from only fossil fuels
to renewable and nuclear energy. Population growth, and by consequence, a scale-up of indus- trial activity has led to a growing demand of energy, especially in the past 200 years. Early 19th century, because of a shortage of wood, the easy access and seemingly inexhaustible supply of coal, men began using coal as a major energy supply. Later, in the beginning of the 20th century, with the invention of the car, oil was about to surpass the use of coal partly due to its greater specic energy of about 40MJ/kg compared to 25MJ/kg for coal. The use of natural gas in the mid-20th century expanded by the construction of pipelines, making it more accessible in households. Followed by the energy crisis in the 1970s, mankind realised that fossil fuels, especially oil, was nite and only accessible in certain parts of the world. Later, in the 1990s, a remarkable elevation in the concentration of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere was evidenced. This led to the climate debate and treaties about greenhouse gas emissions and global warming where all parties engaged to make an eort to reduce the emissions. Especially CO2 emission due to the combustion of fossil fuels was to be reduced. This boosted the development of alternative ways to produce energy with renewable energies like solar power, hydro-energy, wind energy,... and nuclear energy. |
