Alphonse Jacques de Dixmude (1858-1928) is de man achter het veelbesproken standbeeld op de Grote Markt van Diksmuide. Maar zijn verhaal reikt verder dan de schaduw van de kerktoren. Alphonse Jacques de Dixmude staat op het voorplan tijdens twee belangrijke episodes in de geschiedenis van het jonge België: de inrichting en exploitatie van Leopold II’s Onafhankelijke Congostaat (1885-1908) en de Eerste Wereldoorlog (1914-1918). Ondanks die indrukwekkende en lange carrière draagt zijn naam, tot ver buiten de landsgrenzen, nog steeds een negatieve bijklank. De auteurs volgen Alphonse Jacques de Dixmude van aan de oevers van het Tanganyikameer en de rubberwingebieden in de klamme Congolese brousse tot aan de kille loopgraven van het IJzerfront (1914-1917) en het bloedige eindoffensief (1918). In de zoektocht naar het ontstaan van Jacques de Dixmude’s negatieve reputatie scheiden ze feiten zorgvuldig van fictie. Aan de hand van nieuwe en nooit eerder gepubliceerde bronnen schetsen ze met open vizier het boeiende parcours van een opmerkelijke figuur doorheen vier decennia vaderlandse geschiedenis.
The authors shed a new light on Alphonse Jacques de Dixmude (1858-1928), the man who has been occupying a place of honour on the market of Dixmude since 1930, but whose reputation far exceeds the city?s boundaries. They highlight the colonial and military career of Alphonse Jacques de Dixmude. On the basis of new and previously unpublished sources they outline the fascinating but bumpy course of this remarkable figure during the most turbulent decades in Belgian history: from Dixmude to lake Tanganyika in Central Africa and from the rubber plantations in the damp Congolese jungle to the deadly trenches around the Yser during the First World War. They also discuss the questionable reputation of the man and the controversy surrounding the statue on the Market today. |
