Résumé : |
During the Second World War the airborne forces were used for the first time in great
numbers in operations and immediately showed great potential. To this day, this potential has not yet dissipated. To examine the development of these forces one has to start at the beginning. As such, the Second World War is the place to start. In this thesis, a comparison is made between two airborne operations of the Second World War to determine the differences and similarities between the operations on the Western and Eastern front. In the East the airborne operation at the Dnepr is examined and in the West operation Market Garden. The author did an analytical literature study to describe the components on both fronts, followed by an individual comparison of these components. Lastly, a conclusion is drawn from these comparisons to answer the research question. In the end, we learn from this thesis that the airborne forces were regarded differently by the high commands on either front and this reflected strongly on the planning and the conduct of operations. Furthermore, the author realised that the biggest problem for airborne operations is often the speed in which the operations had to be planned, leaving the door open for errors. |
