Résumé : | A textbook for undergraduate students of mathematics and the physical and biological sciences explains the use of mathematics as a tool or modeling and understanding biological phenomena, especially how mathematicians have honed the theory of nonlinear differential equations in response to gauntlets biologists have thrown down before them. Among the topics are linear ordinary differential equations with constant coefficients, the mathematics of heart physiology, chemical reactions, predator and prey, evolutionary equations, bifurcation and chaos, the growth of tumors, and epidemics. Answers are provided for selected exercises. The first CRC edition was published in 2003, but the original edition was published in 1983 by Allen and Unwin. This one accounts for the experience of many courses in mathematical and systems biology now being taught. |
