Flexible string movements are considered along with discontinuous solutions of the wave equation, string profiles with a moving vertex, periodic wave functions, variable wave patterns, causality and the superposition of exponential wave functions, conditions for permanence and exponential decay of progressive wave profiles, movements of a heavy chain and a compressible medium, a third order equation of motion, the influence of viscoelasticity on signal transmission, string vibrations and the Doppler effect, excitation of a string by a fixed or moving local force, boundary conditions and normal modes of vibration, the solution of an inhomogeneous wave equation on a finite coordinate interval, and instantaneous and moving point source functions. Attention is also given to aspects of interference, energy density and flux, energy propagation and the group velocity, wave kinematics and dispersion, Green's functions and the periodically loaded string, forced and free motions of a regularly loaded string, wave motions in a linear chain, a string with continuously variable density, an inhomogeneous segment, an inhomogeneous layer, and perturbation calculations in cases of nonuniformity
